THE FAQ's Here are the answers to some very frequently asked questions...
Q: Where can I live this summer? A: Sierra Adventure Camps is primarily an 8-week Watersports Day Camp Program. It is best to live in the West LA or San Fernando Valley areas to minimize travel times for yourself.
Q: What will my work schedule be like? A: The first 8 weeks are the Watersports Day Camp Program. You will work Monday through Friday (June 21 - August 13, 2010) with evenings and weekends off. The exception is our periodic staff meetings/training that occur throughout the summer (a Staff Calendar will be given at the time of interview). The Sierra Sleep-Away takes place after the end of Day Camp, and it lasts for 12 days (August 16-27, 2010). You will be at Bass Lake, CA during the entire 12-day period. The hours of a Sleep-Away camp are generally longer. You will have the opportunity to live with your campers...waking up around 7:00 a.m. and returning to your sleeping bag around 11:00 p.m. Time off will be given each day. Staff meetings and bonding take place each evening approximately 9:30 -11:00 p.m. We will provide all of your transportation, housing (tent living!), and food expenses during the Sleep-Away. This is an exciting and memorable event that you will cherish thoughout your life. The last day of camp and summer employment is Friday, August 27, 2010.
Q: Do I need to provide my own housing? A: Since SAC is primarily a day camp, all staff are required to obtain their own housing.
Q: Do I need my own car? A: No. Our staff will be given a new 2010 camp van for the summer. Each van is air-conditioned and comfortable to drive. You will simply leave your house in the morning and drive the camp van directly to your first stop to pick up campers. After you have made your stops and your campers are picked up, you will drive directly to our site for the day. We generally try to give you a route area near where you live. This is why living in the West LA or San Fernando Valley area is helpful to you.
Q: What are my hours? A: You will work approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. Some days vary in time depending on where you live and where we are going. This is only an estimate of time. Some days you may start work a little earlier (8:00 a.m.) or later and some days end earlier (5 p.m.) or later.
Q: What's a typical day like? A: There really is not a typical day in our program since our watersports program varies, thus making it more exciting than the same ol' routine. Each day we will be at a different location (i.e. Marina Day, Beach Day, Lake Day, Tapia Park Day, and Hurricane Harbor Water Park Day) and each location is quite different and offers different activities. However, an example of a "typical" day will include you driving your camp van to pick up your campers, then drive directly to the Marina. Once all the camp vans have arrived at the Marina, each camper will divide into their assigned groups. As a Group Leader, you will then lead you group throughout the day following a schedule. Each group will participate in sailing, canoeing, boogie boarding at the beach, lunch, and games. At the end of the day, you will drop off your campers back at their home or meet point and then head home yourself.
Q: Am I qualified to work in a watersports camp? A: We are seeking outgoing, enthusiastic staff who enjoy the outdoors and who like the water. We do require some background in watersports. We offer many differnt watersports in our program such as sailing, canoeing, kayaking, boating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, snorkeling, boogie boarding, surfing, swimming, etc. If you have had any type of experience in any of these water sports you may be qualified. Apply online or contact the camp office directly. All staff will be trained and prepared prior to camp opening.
A: Training days take place in June and are mandatory:
Friday, June 11 Saturday, June 12 Sunday, June 13 Saturday, June 19
There are other training days that are arranged individually. A full training schedule will be provided at the time of interview. Staff are paid for all training hours worked.
